Dentistry had a theory war?
They had a full curriculum war. For decades, dental schools ran on what's called the traditional model — two years of basic science and preclinical theory, then two years of clinical work with patients. The theory came first, walled off from practice. And starting around the mid two thousands, a bunch of schools started flipping it. They moved to what they call comprehensive care models where students see patients in year one, and the theory gets taught around the case, not before it.
So the patient walks in, and the student learns the theory of what's wrong with them while they're sitting in the chair.
And the outcomes are — well, they're mixed in ways that tell you something about the whole debate. Students in the integrated model report feeling more prepared. They're more confident. But their performance on the national board exams didn't actually move much. The knowledge base lands in the same place either way.
Which suggests the theory-practice sequencing argument is mostly about comfort, not competence.
For that specific case, yes. But here's where it gets interesting — the integrated model produces dentists who are measurably faster at diagnosis in their first years of practice. They've been pattern-matching against real mouths since day one. The traditional model produces dentists who are slower out of the gate but better at handling rare presentations, because they built the theoretical framework first and the rare thing fits into it.
So neither model wins. They produce different dentists.
Different dentists with different weaknesses. And that's the thing I think gets lost in the "practitioners should teach" argument — it assumes there's one kind of competence and the practitioner has all of it.
Let's pull on law, since Daniel studied it and that's where he anchored the question. He mentioned that his lecturers were mostly former or active lawyers and that this was seen as a positive.
The American law school model has been fighting about this since at least the Langdell era. Christopher Columbus Langdell, Harvard Law dean in the eighteen seventies, invented the case method — students read appellate opinions and derive principles from them. He was not a practicing lawyer. He'd practiced for about five years, didn't enjoy it, and then dedicated himself to making legal education theoretical. His explicit argument was that law is a science and the library is the laboratory.
And that model held for what, a hundred-plus years?
It's still the dominant model. But the critique has been loud since at least the nineteen twenties — the legal realists argued that what judges say they're doing and what they're actually doing are different things, and you can't learn the second one from a textbook. Then the clinical legal education movement in the sixties and seventies said students need to work on real cases.
And now?
Now the elite law schools are in a strange place. If you look at the faculty at Yale or Harvard Law, a substantial portion have never practiced. They have PhDs in economics or philosophy or political science alongside their JDs. They're producing theoretical scholarship that's empirically rigorous but often completely disconnected from what courts actually do. Meanwhile, the clinical faculty — the ones running the practice programs — are often on separate tracks with lower pay and less job security.
So the schools have recreated the hierarchy inside their own walls. The theorists are tenured, the practitioners are contingent.
And here's where Daniel's question about burnout lands hard. The clinical professors are doing exactly what he's describing — they're practicing and teaching simultaneously. They carry caseloads. They supervise students. They're expected to publish scholarship. And they're burning out at rates that have been documented since the nineties.
What's the rate?
There's no single clean number, but the clinical legal education association has been tracking this for decades and the attrition out of clinical teaching is consistently higher than doctrinal faculty. People go back to practice because the dual role is unsustainable.
So the dual practitioner-theorist ideal exists, law schools claim to value it, and then they structure the job so that the people who actually do it leave.
That's the pattern. And it's not unique to law. Medicine has its own version.
Walk me through medicine. You lived it.
I did. And I was on both sides of this. When I was practicing, I taught residents. When I retired from practice, I taught full-time for a few years. The difference in how you think about a case when you're responsible for the outcome versus when you're teaching the principles is — it's not subtle. It's a different cognitive mode.
Different how?
When you're practicing, you're making decisions under uncertainty with incomplete information and a clock running. You develop heuristics. Some of them are good, some of them are shortcuts you don't even know you're taking. When you're teaching, you have the luxury of saying "it depends" and walking through the differential. The practitioner's knowledge is compressed and tacit. The teacher's job is to decompress it and make it explicit.
And doing both means constantly switching between compressed and decompressed modes.
Which is exhausting in a way that's hard to describe unless you've done it. You finish a morning of teaching where you've been careful and thorough and nuanced, and then you walk into a clinic where you have twelve minutes per patient and you have to make calls. The cognitive whiplash is real.
Daniel's question about burnout isn't hypothetical for you.
No. And I'll say this — the physicians I know who do both well are the ones who've structured it so the modes don't bleed into each other. They have dedicated teaching days and dedicated clinical days. They don't try to do both in the same half-day. The ones who mix them constantly are the ones who end up on leave.
Let me push on something. You said the practitioner's knowledge is compressed. Does that mean the best theory comes from practice, or does it mean practice produces a kind of knowledge that's useful but not theoretical?
That's the core question, isn't it? I think practice produces knowledge that's essential for theory to be any good, but practice alone doesn't produce theory. The theorist's job is to look across hundreds of practitioners' compressed knowledge and find the patterns that none of them can see individually because they're too close to their own cases.
So the theorist needs the practitioner's data, but the practitioner doesn't necessarily need to be the theorist.
Right. And the best arrangement I've seen is when the theorist and practitioner are in regular conversation, not when they're the same person. The dual-role ideal is romantic but it might be asking for two different brains in one skull.
Architecture is interesting here because Daniel mentioned it and his wife Hannah's an architect. That field has a formalized version of this tension.
The studio model.
Right. Architecture education is built around the design studio, where students work on projects under the supervision of a practicing architect. The theory and the practice are supposed to be fused from day one. And the critique of architecture education is that it's still too theoretical — students graduate knowing how to design a museum but not how to detail a wall section that won't leak.
The leaky wall is the architecture version of the lawyer who can't file a motion.
And yet architecture, unlike law or medicine, has a formal mechanism for the dual role. The studio critic is usually a practitioner. They're not a separate clinical track — they're the core faculty.
Does it work?
Depends who you ask. The schools say yes. The firms that hire graduates say no, and they've been saying no for decades. There's a whole industry of post-graduation practical training because the schools aren't producing practice-ready architects.
So even with the integrated model, the gap persists.
Which suggests the gap isn't about curriculum structure. It's about something deeper.
Say more.
Every field has tacit knowledge — the stuff you can only learn by doing. The weight of a tool, the feel of a material, the rhythm of a negotiation, the way a patient's story doesn't quite fit the textbook presentation. You can't teach that in a classroom no matter who's teaching it, because the classroom is the wrong context. The practitioner-teacher might be better at pointing to it, saying "this is the part you'll only get when you're doing it," but they can't transmit it.
The medium is the limitation, not the messenger.
Yeah. And if that's true, then the whole debate about whether practitioners should teach is arguing about the wrong thing. The question isn't who teaches. It's that some things can't be taught.
I think that's partly right but too strong. Let me give you a counterexample from my own training. I had an attending physician in residency who was terrible at explaining things. His lectures were disorganized, he'd go off on tangents — but watching him with patients was a masterclass. He'd pick up on things that weren't in any textbook. And after watching him for six months, I started picking up on them too. He didn't teach it. He modeled it. And I learned it.
So the practitioner teaches by being observed, not by explaining.
Which is a completely different theory of education than what universities are built on. Universities are built on the idea that knowledge is explicit and transferable through language. But a huge amount of professional knowledge isn't.
This connects to something Daniel didn't ask directly but is lurking in his question. If the best knowledge is tacit and can only be learned through practice, then the academic theorist is not just unnecessary — they're actively misleading. They're producing explicit knowledge that pretends to be complete.
That's the strong version of the critique. And I think it goes too far. Explicit knowledge has real value. It lets you reason about edge cases you haven't encountered. It lets you communicate across specialties. It lets you build on other people's work. The problem isn't explicit knowledge. The problem is when the explicit model is treated as a substitute for the tacit one.
The map that thinks it's the territory.
And the best practitioner-teachers I've known are the ones who are constantly pointing at the gap between the map and the territory. They teach the theory and then they say "and here's where it breaks down, and here's what you do when it breaks down."
Which brings us back to burnout, because what you just described is twice the work.
It is. You have to know the theory cold and you have to know all the ways it fails in practice, and you have to be able to articulate both. That's a brutal cognitive load.
Let me try to synthesize where we are. Daniel asked whether there's a consensus emerging that teachers should also be practitioners. I think the answer is that there's a consensus that pure theory disconnected from practice is bad, but there's no consensus on what the right mix is, and the fields that have tried to mandate the dual role have mostly created burnout machines.
I'd add that the consensus varies by field in ways that tell you something about the nature of the work. Fields where the practice involves high-stakes, time-pressured decision-making — medicine, law, emergency management — those fields tend to value the practitioner-teacher more, because the tacit knowledge is load-bearing in a way it isn't in, say, pure mathematics.
Mathematics is the counterexample that's worth sitting with. You can be a brilliant pure mathematician who's never applied anything to a real-world problem, and nobody thinks that discredits you. The theory is the practice.
And mathematics is also the field where the theory-practice gap is narrowest, because the objects of study are entirely abstract. There's no tacit knowledge about how concrete behaves under load because there's no concrete.
So the gap widens as the field gets more embodied.
That's a useful frame. Plumbing theory would be absurd not because plumbing doesn't have principles — it does, fluid dynamics is real — but because the principles are so thoroughly entangled with the physical world that separating them from practice strips out everything that matters.
Which is why nobody calls themselves a plumbing theorist. The theory is inseparable from the pipe in your hand.
And the fields Daniel mentioned — law, medicine, dentistry, architecture — they're all in the middle. They have substantial theoretical content, but they also have irreducible embodied practice. That's exactly where the tension lives.
Let's talk about what actually works, because Daniel's question is practical at bottom. If you want to produce people who can both think and do, what's the model?
I keep coming back to the teaching hospital. It's not perfect, but it's the closest thing we have to a working synthesis. You have a hierarchy where everyone is both learning and doing. The attending physician is practicing and teaching simultaneously. The residents are practicing and learning and also teaching the interns. The interns are drowning but they're doing real work. And the theory gets discussed in the context of actual patients, not in a lecture hall.
And the burnout in that model?
Is legendary. Residents work eighty-hour weeks and it's been that way forever, and the reform efforts have been... partial.
So even the best model we have burns people out.
Which makes me wonder if the problem isn't the model but the expectation. Maybe "practitioner-theorist" is two jobs, and asking one person to do both at a high level is inherently unsustainable.
Unless you change what "high level" means. Maybe the practitioner-theorist doesn't need to be at the cutting edge of both simultaneously. Maybe they cycle.
The cycling idea shows up in some fields. In business schools, it's common for professors to spend a few years in industry, then a few years teaching, then back to industry. They're never doing both at the same time, but over a career they accumulate both kinds of knowledge.
And in law, judges are often drawn from practice and then spend years doing something that's closer to theory — they're synthesizing principles from cases. Then some of them go back to practice. It's a natural cycle.
The cycling model also solves something we haven't talked about, which is that practice changes. If you've been in the academy for twenty years, the practice you left is not the practice that exists now. Your tacit knowledge is stale.
How fast does it go stale?
Depends on the field. In tech, maybe two years. In law, maybe five to ten. In architecture, the materials and codes change but the fundamental design problems don't, so maybe longer. In medicine — I'd say five to seven years before your clinical instincts are meaningfully out of date.
So if you're a full-time academic for twenty years, your practice knowledge is worthless by year seven at the latest, and you're teaching from memory after that.
Teaching from memory of practice, which is different from teaching from practice. And the students can't always tell the difference.
That's a grim thought.
It's why the cycling model has real appeal. If you're in and out of practice every few years, your knowledge stays current. But it's also why the cycling model is rare — institutions aren't built for it. Universities want tenure-track faculty who stay for thirty years. Law firms want partners who don't leave for academic sabbaticals.
The structures are optimized for specialization, and the dual-role ideal is asking people to fight the structures.
Yes. And burnout is what happens when an individual tries to overcome a structural problem through sheer effort.
That's the line of the episode right there.
I'll stand by it. You can't self-care your way out of a role that's designed to be impossible.
Let me bring this back to Daniel's question about teaching specifically. If the structures are optimized for specialization, and the dual role is structurally impossible to sustain, then the norm that teachers should also be practitioners is a norm that can only be honored in the breach.
Or honored by redefining what "practitioner" means in the context of teaching. Maybe the teacher doesn't need to be a full-time practitioner. Maybe they need to be practicing enough to keep their tacit knowledge alive.
What's the minimum dose?
I don't think anyone's studied this systematically across fields. But anecdotally — the physicians I know who teach well while practicing tend to do about one day a week of clinical work. Less than that and they start to lose the feel. More than that and the teaching suffers.
One day a week is twenty percent time. That seems manageable.
It's manageable if the institution supports it. But most don't. The clinical professor who wants to maintain a practice has to negotiate it as an exception, not a standard arrangement. The default is full-time academic with no practice expectation.
So the norm Daniel's asking about — that teachers should practice — is widely endorsed and rarely supported.
It's an aspirational norm with no structural backing. And an aspirational norm without structural backing is just a way to make people feel inadequate.
That's a second line of the episode.

Let's talk about the other side of this. Daniel mentioned the argument that theorists are unnecessary. That's a stronger claim than "teachers should practice." It's saying the pure theorist has no value.
And I think that's clearly wrong, but I understand where it comes from. It comes from the experience of being told how to do your job by someone who's never done it.
The architect who's never been on a construction site, telling the contractor how to build.
That's infuriating, and it happens constantly. But the solution isn't to eliminate theorists. It's to make sure theorists are in conversation with practitioners.
What does the pure theorist actually contribute? If we're defending their existence.
They do the synthesis work that practitioners can't do because they're too busy practicing. A legal theorist who's never tried a case can still identify patterns across hundreds of cases that individual litigators would never see. A medical researcher who doesn't see patients can still run the trial that changes clinical practice. The division of labor exists for a reason.
So the argument isn't that theorists are useless. It's that theorists who are disconnected from practice produce bad theory.
And theorists who are connected to practice — through collaboration, through cycling, through whatever mechanism — produce theory that's actually useful. The connection is the thing, not the role.
I want to go back to something you said earlier about fields where the theory-practice gap is narrowest. Mathematics, theoretical physics, philosophy — fields where the objects of study are abstract. In those fields, the pure theorist is the norm and nobody complains.
Because the theory is the practice. A mathematician doing pure math is practicing mathematics. There's no separate "applied" version that's considered the real thing.
And the fields Daniel asked about — law, medicine, architecture — they all have a separate applied version that's considered the real thing. The real lawyer tries cases. The real doctor sees patients. The real architect builds buildings.
Which means the theory-practice distinction is partly about prestige. In fields where practice has higher prestige, the theorists are defensive. In fields where theory has higher prestige, the practitioners are defensive.
So we're not just talking about knowledge. We're talking about status.
Always. Every field has a status hierarchy, and the theory-practice split maps onto it in ways that are mostly about who gets paid more and who gets respected more.
In medicine, the practitioners have higher status. Surgeons make more than medical school professors.
In law, it's split. The elite academics at top schools have enormous prestige, but the partners at elite firms make more money. In architecture, the practitioners who build iconic buildings have the highest status, but the theorists who define the discourse have a different kind of influence.
And in all of these fields, the people at the bottom of the status hierarchy are the ones being told they should be more like the people at the top.
Which is why the "practitioners should teach" argument is never symmetrically applied. Nobody says elite theorists should go practice. They say practitioners should theorize.
Because theory is seen as the higher cognitive activity, even when practice has higher status. It's a weird double bind.
The theorist gets to define what counts as knowledge. The practitioner has to live with the consequences of that definition.
When Daniel asks whether there's a consensus that teachers should practice, part of what he's picking up on is a status negotiation. The practitioners are saying "we should have more say in what counts as knowledge in our field."
They're not wrong. The question is how to give them that say without burning them out, and without losing the genuine value that specialized theorists provide.
Which brings us back to structures. The cycling model, the teaching hospital model, the one-day-a-week model — they all require institutions to value the connection enough to build it into the job description.
Right now, most institutions don't. They give lip service to practice-informed teaching and then design jobs that make it impossible.
Daniel's second question — how do we prevent burnout — is really a question about whether institutions are willing to change. The individual can't solve this alone.
The individual can do a few things. They can negotiate protected practice time. They can set boundaries around when they're in which mode. They can find collaborators who cover the side they're weaker on. But you're right — at the end of the day, if the job is designed to require sixty hours a week of teaching and scholarship, and practice is supposed to happen in the remaining time, the math doesn't work.
The honest answer to Daniel is: the consensus is emerging in rhetoric but not in practice, the dual role is valuable but structurally unsupported, and burnout is the predictable result of asking individuals to solve an institutional problem.
That's the episode.
Almost. We haven't talked about dentistry enough and I feel like dentistry deserves more.
Dentistry is the field where the theory-practice integration has been most deliberate and most studied, and the results are... fine. They're fine. The integrated model produces dentists who are slightly more confident and slightly faster at diagnosis, and the traditional model produces dentists who are slightly more thorough with rare cases. The differences are real but small.
Which suggests that the whole debate might matter less than we think.
For educational outcomes, maybe. For the experience of the people doing the teaching and practicing, it matters enormously. The dual-role clinician-educator burns out. That's consistent across fields.
We're optimizing for the wrong thing. We're asking whether the dual role produces better students, when we should be asking whether it's survivable for the people doing it.
If it's not survivable, then even if it produces better students, it's not a sustainable model.
That's where I land. The dual practitioner-theorist ideal is beautiful on paper and brutal in practice, and until we build structures that make it sustainable, we're just burning through people.
Hilbert: Nineteen eighty-four. The Makita nine-eight-two-two.
...Alright.
Hilbert: I worked in a cabinet shop one summer. The foreman had a theory about everything. Wood movement, joinery, finish chemistry. He'd read books. He'd never built a cabinet in his life. The actual cabinetmakers — they couldn't tell you why a dovetail was stronger than a box joint. They just knew it was, and they cut them. The foreman would come through and explain the theory of why they were doing what they were already doing. They ignored him.
Did the theory ever catch something the practice missed?
Hilbert: Once. He noticed the humidity in the shop was higher than the wood had been seasoned for, and he made them adjust the panel gaps. He was right. They still ignored him the next time.
The theory was correct and it didn't matter because the relationship was broken.
Hilbert: The relationship was broken before he opened his mouth. He'd never built anything. They knew it. He knew they knew it. The theory was fine. The credential was the problem.
That's exactly the status thing we were talking about. The foreman had theoretical knowledge and no practice credibility, so the knowledge was rejected regardless of its quality.
Hilbert: He also had these very small hands. Couldn't grip the clamps properly. I don't know if that's relevant.
I think it might be, actually. The embodied part. If you can't hold the tools, you're not really in the trade.
Hilbert: He tried to tighten a bar clamp once and it slipped and hit him in the chin. That was the end of his shop-floor credibility.
Did he keep the job?
Hilbert: He was the owner's nephew. He was fine. Probably still there. The Makita nine-eight-two-two is a three-quarter-inch router. He bought it because a magazine said it was the best. Never took it out of the box. Still in the box, I assume, thirty years later.
The theorist who buys the tool and never uses it. That's an image.
Hilbert: The box is probably worth something now. Vintage Makita.
The misconception people have about this whole debate is that it's about knowledge. That the practitioner knows things the theorist doesn't, or vice versa. It's not about knowledge. It's about credibility. The same idea from the right mouth lands differently.
Credibility comes from having done the thing, not from having thought about the thing. That's the part the theorists keep missing.
