Daniel's been thinking about jigsaws this week, and he's landed on a position I think is more defensible than most people realize. And the spec sheet is where this gets weird, because the numbers everyone shops by are almost never the numbers that determine whether the saw is any good.
Right. Amps and strokes per minute are the first thing on the box, and they're the least predictive. The real differences live in places that don't get printed on the cardboard.
Blade deflection, guide roller rigidity, how well the dust blower clears the cutline. Wood Magazine ran a ten-saw test a while back and the two saws that made dead-on perpendicular cuts consistently were the ones with guide rollers that didn't wiggle. The worst saws deflected up to an eighth of an inch in inch-and-a-half stock. That's not a rounding error, that's a ruined workpiece.
An eighth of an inch in a jigsaw cut might as well be a mile. So let's work through Daniel's actual question properly. He wants the buyer's guide, and he wants the corded case made honestly. I think the honest version is more interesting than the one most people reach for.
The old case was corded equals more power. That's not really true anymore. Bob Vila tested the Milwaukee M18 Fuel cordless and found it cut faster than every corded saw in their group. They described it as equivalent to a seven amp corded tool. So if someone tells you corded is about raw power, they're working from a 2015 script.
The real corded argument now is runtime without fade, lower price, and no battery ecosystem lock-in. A corded saw pulls five to seven amps, about five to eight hundred watts, and it does that from the first cut to the last. No voltage sag when the pack gets warm, no swapping batteries mid-project, no discovering that your one pack died exactly when you needed to finish a cut.
And price. A good corded jigsaw, like the Bosch JS470E, runs about one hundred twenty to one hundred sixty dollars. The top cordless models run more, and then you're in for batteries and chargers. If you're a weekend woodworker cutting curves in plywood and scribing baseboard, corded is the financially sane choice.
Daniel's instinct is right, and I'd push it further. The jigsaw is a tool you use for awkward cuts, and awkward cuts are exactly when you don't want to be thinking about battery state of charge. You're under a cabinet, the blade's upside down, you're halfway through a notch, and the last thing you need is a low-battery chirp.
The counterpoint is site work. If you're building decks and pergolas without power on site, cordless is the answer. Bob Vila's tester said exactly that. Cordless for site work, corded for shop and home. That's a clean split.
So let's do the spec sheet properly. What actually matters when you're comparing models?
I'd start with stroke length, because that's the depth muscle. You want one inch or more. Short stroke saws, under an inch, bog down in thick stock. Bob Vila's tested models ranged from eleven sixteenths on the Makita 4329K to a full inch on the Bosch, Milwaukee, DeWalt, and Ryobi. That eleven sixteenths sounds close to an inch, but in practice it's the difference between pushing through a two-by and stalling.
And stroke length is one of those numbers that's actually printed, so you can check it. Amperage is the other printed number, and it matters less than people think. Most modern corded jigsaws run five to seven amps. Five amps is enough for do-it-yourself work. Seven or eight amps is for heavy duty. But here's the thing: nearly every saw on the shelf clears that bar. Amperage doesn't separate winners from losers.
Strokes per minute is the same story. Typical range is five hundred to thirty-five hundred. Farm and Fleet says look for at least twenty-five hundred at the top end. But again, almost everything modern hits that. The speed range matters more for control than for raw capability. You want the low end to go slow enough for metal and for starting delicate cuts.
Which brings us to variable speed, and this is where I have a strong opinion. The trigger setup matters enormously. The best configuration is a variable-speed trigger plus a max-speed dial. You set the ceiling with the dial, then squeeze the trigger to vary speed up to that limit. That means mid-cut, approaching a tight curve, you can ease off without taking your hand off the tool.
Wood Magazine was emphatic about this. The dial-only saws force you to stop and adjust, and the trigger-only saws give you no repeatability. The dial-plus-trigger setup is the one that feels like the tool is reading your mind.
Orbital action is the next thing, and it's the setting most people never touch because they don't understand it. The blade tilts forward on the upstroke, like a pendulum. Four settings, zero is straight, three is aggressive. More orbit means faster cutting but more tear-out and less accuracy.
And never use orbital on metal. It snaps blades. That's not a preference, that's a physics problem. On wood, the cleanest cuts come from zero orbit, but a little orbit helps you cut curves without backing up and repositioning constantly. It's a trade between speed and surface quality, and the right answer depends on whether you're roughing or finishing.
The blade clamp is the thing that separates a tool you enjoy from a tool you resent. T-shank is the modern universal standard. Bosch invented it, and now every major brand takes the same blades. Tool-free quick change, five to ten seconds. U-shank is the legacy standard, needs a hex key, thirty seconds or more.
T-shank is rare in power tools: an actual interoperability win. You can buy Bosch blades and run them in a DeWalt saw. You're not locked into anyone's blade ecosystem. That's worth knowing because it means you should never overpay for brand-matched blades.
And the lever-action clamp is the one to look for. Some cheaper saws have a tool-free clamp that's still fiddly. The good ones, the lever-action ones, eject the blade and accept the new one in one motion. Woodworker George Matusyan flagged this in Bob Vila's piece: lever-action clamps reduce downtime significantly. It sounds like a small thing until you're changing blades three times in one project.
Handle type is the genuine debate in jigsaw buying. Top-handle, the D-grip, is the traditional shape. It's easier for smaller hands, it's what most people learn on. But the taller grip increases lateral leverage, which can tip the saw on you mid-cut.
Barrel-grip keeps your hand lower, closer to the work, which gives more control. It's the preferred shape for under-the-table cutting, blade facing up. But here's where sources disagree. ToolsRadar says skip barrel-grip unless you're doing overhead work daily, top-handle wins for control. Bob Vila and a lot of woodworkers I respect say the opposite.
I don't think there's a correct answer. I think it's a hand-size and body-mechanics question. If you can, hold both before buying. The one that lets you see the cutline without craning your neck is the one for you. But don't let a reviewer decide that for you.
Bevel capacity is the next spec. The base tilts zero to forty-five degrees left and right. What matters is whether the adjustment is tool-free. Bob Vila dinged the Black and Decker and the Milwaukee for non-tool-free bevel adjustment. A hex key bevel is a tool you'll use once, get annoyed, and never bevel again.
Cutline visibility is the thing that separates a satisfying jigsaw experience from a frustrating one. You need a built-in blower to clear dust and an LED light. Wood Magazine tested blowers and found the ones on Bosch, Hitachi, Milwaukee, and Porter-Cable cleared dust best. Several others were too weak to do anything. A weak blower means you're stopping every few inches to blow dust off the line yourself.
And the LED is not a gimmick. Jigsaw cuts happen in shadow, especially under cabinets and inside cutouts. A light that actually illuminates the blade path changes the accuracy of the cut.
The guide roller is the thing nobody puts on the spec sheet and it's the thing that determines whether your cut is square. The blade rides against a roller close to the shoe. If that roller is rigid, the blade stays perpendicular. If it wiggles side to side, or lets the blade jump out, you get exactly the eighth-inch deflection we talked about. This is the single best reason to read a real test before buying instead of comparing numbers online.
And it's why two saws with identical printed specs can cut completely differently. The marketing department can't put guide roller rigidity on the box in a way that means anything, so they don't. But it's the difference between a saw that tracks a line and a saw that wanders.
Let me give you the actual winners from the Wood Magazine test, because the names will be useful. They tested ten corded jigsaws, seventy to one seventy-five dollars, all variable speed, all D-grip. The Milwaukee 6268-21 took Top Tool. They said it hit home runs nearly across the board: highly accurate cutting with no deflection, easy blade changes with a self-ejecting clamp, good cutline visibility with a strong blower and LED light.
The Bosch JS470E won their value pick, around a hundred sixty dollars, seven amps, thirty-one hundred strokes per minute. The DeWalt DW331K was the other top performer. And the Hitachi CJ90VST at seventy-five dollars was their Top Value.
The Hitachi is interesting because it proves the point: a cheap saw can be good if the fundamentals are right. It's not about buying the most expensive saw. It's about buying the saw whose guide roller and blower and clamp were designed by someone who actually uses the tool.
The Bosch JS572EBK is the current flagship corded model, seven point two amps, eight hundred to three thousand strokes per minute, one inch stroke. Bob Vila's tester said it excelled at speed, maneuverability, and minimal chip-out at both ninety and forty-five degrees. That's the one I'd point Daniel toward if he wants the buy-once option.
And the DeWalt DCS334B is the cordless reference point, around one fifty to one eighty, one inch stroke. But we've already established Daniel's corded instinct is sound.
Let's talk about the things cheap saws get wrong, because there's a pattern. Splintering and tear-out, wandering blades, and bogging on thick stock. The fix is usually orbital action plus variable speed plus a good blade, not more amps.
The blade is the part people underrate. A jigsaw is only as good as the blade you put in it. TPI, tooth geometry, material. For wood, lower TPI cuts faster and rougher, higher TPI cuts slower and cleaner. For metal, you want high TPI and a bi-metal blade. For laminate and veneer, you want a down-cutting blade to prevent chip-out on the visible surface.
And the blade is consumable. Buying a great saw and running the three blades that came in the box for two years is false economy. Blades are cheap. Replace them when they get dull, and match the blade to the material every time.
Safety note that's actually practical: jigsaws can jump if the shoe isn't flat or the blade is wrong. That's not a hypothetical. The saw will kick back toward you if the blade binds or the base isn't seated. Keep the shoe flat, let the blade do the work, don't force it.
The history is worth thirty seconds because it explains why the tool exists. The modern portable jigsaw was introduced in nineteen forty-seven by Scintilla AG, later acquired by Bosch. The engineer, Albert Kaufmann, reportedly replaced the needle on his wife's sewing machine with a saw blade in nineteen forty-six. The reciprocating action is literally a sewing machine needle adapted to cut.
That's why the jigsaw does what no other saw does. A circular saw spins, so it cuts straight lines and gentle curves. A jigsaw strokes up and down, so it can cut tight curves, circles, internal cutouts, plunge cuts, bevels. It's the saw for the cut that no other saw can reach.
The plunge cut is the one that sounds scary until you do it once. You tip the saw forward on the front edge of the shoe, start the blade, lower it slowly into the material. No pilot hole needed. That's how you cut a sink opening in a countertop or an outlet hole in a panel.
And it's why the jigsaw is foundational. You can build a surprising amount of furniture with a jigsaw, a drill, and a sander. The cuts won't be as clean as a table saw, but they'll be curved, which is the point.
Daniel asked specifically about the spec sheet, so let's consolidate. The printed numbers you check: stroke length, one inch or more. Amperage, five to seven, and don't overthink it. Speed range, top end of at least twenty-five hundred, but more importantly a low end that goes slow enough for control.
The printed features you check: orbital action with at least three settings, variable-speed trigger plus max-speed dial, T-shank tool-free blade clamp, bevel adjustment that's tool-free, a blower and LED light.
The unprinted things you have to read a test to find: guide roller rigidity, blade deflection, blower strength. These are the actual determinants of whether the saw cuts square and tracks a line.
And the meta-point: two saws with identical spec sheets can be completely different tools. The spec sheet gets you to the shortlist. The test gets you to the purchase.
Let me put a number on the deflection thing, because it's the most important thing in this whole discussion. An eighth of an inch in inch-and-a-half stock. That's the difference between a saw that cuts square and a saw that cuts a parallelogram. If you're doing joinery, that's the difference between a joint that closes and a joint you have to fill.
And the fix isn't technique. You can't out-skill a wobbly guide roller. You can slow down, you can use a better blade, but if the roller lets the blade wander, the blade wanders. That's a tool problem, not a user problem.
The other thing I'd flag is the cord. On a corded saw, the cord itself matters. Rubber cords stay flexible in the cold. PVC cords get stiff. A lighted plug tells you the saw has power. Cord storage sounds trivial until you're untangling a ten-foot knot every time you open the case.
And the dust port. Most jigsaws have one, and it's worth using with a shop vac. Jigsaw dust is fine and it gets everywhere. The blower helps with the cutline, but the vac port is what keeps your workspace from looking like a snow globe.
The lock-on trigger is the other feature I've come to appreciate. For long straight cuts with a jigsaw, holding the trigger for minutes at a time is fatiguing. The lock-on lets you set the speed and let the saw run. It's a small thing, but on a long scribe cut it matters.
Soft-start is nice too. The saw ramps up instead of jerking to full speed. Less chance of the blade grabbing at startup and marring the surface.
If Daniel walks into a store tomorrow, what's the actual shortlist? For corded, the Bosch JS572EBK if he wants the flagship, around two hundred dollars. The Bosch JS470E if he wants the proven value pick, around one fifty. The Hitachi CJ90VST if he wants to spend under a hundred and still get a real tool.
If he ever flips to cordless, the Milwaukee M18 Fuel is the one that out-cuts corded saws, but he's already made the smarter call for his use case.
The one thing I'd tell him to do before buying is hold a top-handle and a barrel-grip side by side. The handle shape is the most personal decision in jigsaw buying, and no spec sheet can make it for him.
Buy good blades on day one. The blades that come in the box are starter blades. Get a set with wood, metal, and down-cutting blades. You'll use all three within a month.
That's the guide. The jigsaw is the saw for the cut no other saw can make, and corded is the version you can buy once and stop thinking about.
Hilbert: My cousin sold jigsaws door to door in the mid eighties, back when you could still do that. He'd walk into a cabinet shop with a sample case and a stack of catalogs. He always said the same thing: the saw's only as good as the roller behind the blade. He'd flip the saw over and wiggle the roller with his thumb. If it moved, he'd close the case and leave.

The roller test is the thing that should be on the spec sheet and isn't. Flip the saw over, wiggle the roller, and you know more about the tool than the amperage number will ever tell you.
The blade sharpening point is right. Jigsaw blades are consumables. They cost a few dollars each. Dull blades cause more deflection than any other single factor, because the saw has to push harder and the blade flexes under the load.
Hilbert: The forklift never ran. He said it needed a new hydraulic hose and it turned out to need a new everything. But that's my cousin.
The other thing your cousin was right about is the price point. The Hitachi at seventy-five dollars was a real tool. You don't have to spend two hundred to get a jigsaw that cuts square. You have to find the saw whose fundamentals are right, and that's available at the low end.
The guide roller is the whole game. It's the part that determines whether the blade stays perpendicular, and it's the part that cheap saws skimp on first. A rigid roller close to the shoe fixes most of what goes wrong with a jigsaw.
Hilbert: He used to say the shoe is the other half. If the shoe isn't flat, the saw rocks, and if the saw rocks, the blade binds, and if the blade binds, the saw jumps. He'd set the saw on a piece of plate glass and try to rock it. That was his second test.
Hilbert: I still have a Hitachi in a box somewhere. Haven't plugged it in since I moved. But I never got rid of it, because you never know when you need to cut a hole in something that's already installed.
The shoe flatness test is another one that belongs in the buyer's guide. A saw that rocks on a flat surface will never cut square, no matter how good the roller is. The two tests together, roller wiggle and shoe rock, tell you more than the entire printed spec sheet.
The installed-cut point is the jigsaw's whole reason for existing. You can't bring a table saw to a countertop that's already glued down. The jigsaw is the saw that goes to the work instead of the work coming to the saw.
Hilbert: That's the thing people forget. It's not the most powerful saw, it's not the most accurate saw, but it's the only saw you can carry up a ladder and cut a hole in a wall with. My cousin understood that. He sold it as the saw for the cut you didn't plan for.
That's the foundational argument Daniel opened with. The jigsaw earns its keep on the jobs that no other tool can reach. It's not the saw you build a cabinet with, it's the saw you use when the cabinet is already in place and you need a notch for a pipe.
