And he's got two questions underneath the list: what actually makes a power tool absurd rather than merely niche, and what does it say about the people who designed, marketed, and bought these things that they existed at all?
The leaf pruner is a strong opening bid. It takes a task that a twelve-dollar pair of bypass pruners does in two seconds, and it adds a motor, a battery, a charger, and a storage case.
And I want to pause on that storage case, because it's the tell. A pair of pruners hangs on a peg. A leaf pruner comes in a molded plastic case with a specific slot for the charger and a specific slot for the spare blade. The case is the manufacturer admitting, this thing is too fragile and too complicated to just leave on a shelf.
The case is also the marketing. It makes the tool look like it belongs in a professional kit. You open the case and you feel like a surgeon. Then you use it to pinch off a leaf.
So let's start by drawing the line, because the line is the whole game. There are bad tools and there are absurd tools, and they're not the same thing.
A bad tool fails at its job. The absurd tool succeeds at a job nobody needed done that way. That distinction matters because most of the tools we're about to talk about work. They do what they say they do. The question is why anyone thought the task needed a motor.
The anchor example is the Suck Kut. A circular saw with a built-in vacuum. It cuts wood fine. The vacuum is the problem.
The vacuum port sits right next to the blade, so the suction pulls sawdust toward the spinning blade instead of away from the operator. The dust that does get captured gets routed through the motor housing. It's a design where every component fights the component next to it.
The fantasy it's selling is the clean cut. No sawdust on the floor. What it delivers is a saw that works slightly worse and a vacuum that works slightly worse, bolted together.
And the absurdity criterion sharpens there. A tool is absurd when its task is already solved by something cheaper, simpler, or safer, or when the task is so narrow that the tool implies a population of users who barely exist, or when the tool creates new problems while solving the old one. The Suck Kut hits all three at once.
There's also a recurring shape to these things. They cluster around three fantasies. The fantasy of one tool that does everything. The fantasy of eliminating a minor inconvenience at enormous cost. And the fantasy of a task that doesn't exist yet.
The leaf pruner is the second fantasy. The inconvenience is that you have to close your hand around a pair of pruners. The cost is a motorized device you have to charge, clean, and store.
Let's start with the ones that were meant completely seriously, because those are the funniest.
The chainsaw bayonet.
I want to sit with that phrase for a second. The chainsaw bayonet.
It's a real military accessory. A bayonet lug mounted on a chainsaw. It's documented in the list of United States military knives. This was designed for actual combat use.
Walk me through the physics, because I think the physics is where the whole thing collapses.
A chainsaw is a two-stroke engine attached to a spinning chain. The chain binds on soft material — that's actually a safety feature, the chain catches on fabric and flesh rather than slicing clean through. It requires both hands to operate. It has a fuel range measured in minutes, not hours. And mounting it on a rifle makes the rifle heavier, harder to aim, and harder to reload.
So the task it solves is — what, exactly? The enemy is close, and also made of wood?
That's the thing. The chainsaw bayonet solves a problem that does not exist. It makes the rifle worse at being a rifle and the chainsaw worse at being a chainsaw. But it was designed seriously, for a real army, by people who presumably had engineering degrees.
That's the part that gets me. Somebody sat in a room and said, we need our soldiers to be able to cut down a tree and then immediately stab a man with the same tool.
And the absurdity is not that it failed. It's that the premise was treated as a premise worth pursuing. The question "what if the enemy is close and also made of wood" was asked out loud and nobody laughed.
I want to think about that room for a second. The meeting where this got approved. There had to be a presentation. There had to be slides. Somebody stood in front of a committee and said, "Gentlemen, the modern battlefield demands a soldier who can fell timber and engage infantry without changing tools." And the committee said, "Tell us more."
The paperwork alone is staggering. A chainsaw bayonet is not something you improvise. It's something you procure. There are specifications. There are tolerances. Somewhere there's a document that specifies how the bayonet lug must align with the chainsaw bar.
The chainsaw bayonet is the clearest example of the third fantasy — the task that doesn't exist. Nobody needed to stab a man with a chainsaw. But the fantasy was so compelling that it got funded, designed, and documented.
Tool two is the Suck Kut, which we've already touched on. But let me add the detail that makes it perfect: the solution to the sawdust problem already existed. It's a five-dollar shop vac hose taped to a normal saw.
You can buy a dust collection attachment for any circular saw for less than twenty dollars. It's a plastic shroud with a port. The Suck Kut integrated the vacuum into the tool itself, which sounds elegant until you realize the vacuum is now in the worst possible location.
The dust it captures goes through the motor housing. So the tool is actively pulling abrasive particles into the part of the machine that is least able to tolerate abrasive particles.
And the marketing was all about the clean cut. The sawdust-free workshop. What you get is a saw that needs to be disassembled and cleaned more often than a normal saw, which means more sawdust in the air, not less.
There's a beautiful irony there. The tool sold on the promise of less mess creates more maintenance. You're not eliminating the sawdust. You're relocating it to the inside of the motor.
It's the same shape as the leaf pruner. The inconvenience is real — sawdust is annoying. But the solution is worse than the problem. You've traded a broom for a screwdriver and a set of replacement brushes.
Tool three is the electric leaf pruning machine, Daniel's original. I want to be precise about what this thing is. It's a handheld power tool with a small rotating blade or a reciprocating cutter, and it's designed to prune leaves. Not branches. Leaves.
The task it replaces is the act of pinching a leaf off a plant with your fingers. Or, if you want to be formal about it, using a pair of bypass pruners that cost twelve dollars and last twenty years.
The specificity is what kills me. A power tool for a task that takes two seconds by hand. It's not even a time-saving device — by the time you've picked the tool up, aimed it, and pulled the trigger, you could have pruned three leaves by hand.
And it needs charging. And it has a blade that needs cleaning. And it's probably louder than the silence of your fingers doing the same job.
There's a version of this where the leaf pruner makes sense — if you're a commercial nursery and you're pruning thousands of leaves a day. But this was sold to home gardeners. The population of people who need to prune leaves at a rate that exceeds what their hands can do is vanishingly small.
I want to think about the home gardener who bought this. They're standing in their garden. They have a plant that needs a leaf removed. They go inside, get the leaf pruner, bring it outside, aim it, pull the trigger. The leaf comes off. Then they have to clean the blade, because plant sap gums up the mechanism. Then they have to charge it. Then they have to put it back in the molded case.
Or they could have pinched the leaf off with their fingers, which takes less time than the walk back inside to get the tool.
And the tool only does one thing. A pair of pruners can prune leaves, trim stems, cut twine, open bags of soil. The leaf pruner does leaves. That's the entire job description.
Tool four is the Shovel-Ease Max. This is a motorized shovel attachment that vibrates the blade to help it dig.
The mechanism is a reciprocating weight in the handle. It shakes the blade. The idea is that the vibration loosens the soil and makes digging easier.
The problem is that the vibration adds weight to the shovel, which is the one thing a shovel should not have. A shovel is a lever. The whole point is that you supply the force and the tool multiplies it. Adding a motor and a battery to the handle makes the lever heavier, which means you supply more force, not less.
And the vibration loosens the soil around the blade, which sounds helpful until you realize that loosened soil is exactly what you don't want when you're trying to lift a shovelful. The blade slips out, and you're left with a vibrating handle and a pile of loose dirt.
It was sold as a back-saving device. The back saves nothing. The back now has to lift a heavier shovel that's shaking.
There's a physics detail I love here. The vibration is supposed to reduce friction between the blade and the soil. But friction is what holds the soil on the blade. Remove the friction, and the soil stays in the ground. The tool is designed to defeat its own purpose.
It's the same internal contradiction as the Suck Kut. Every component fights the component next to it. The vibration fights the lever. The lever fights the vibration. The back loses.
Tool five is the motorized tie rack. A closet carousel with a motor and a plug.
This is where we cross into a different category. The tie rack is not a bad tool. It rotates. It holds ties. It does exactly what it says.
The absurdity is the category error. Selecting a tie is a task solved by looking at the ties. You open the closet, you look, you pick one. The motorized carousel adds a failure mode — the motor burns out, the carousel jams, the whole thing stops rotating — to a problem that had no failure pattern.
And the problem it solves is not "I can't find my ties." It's "I don't want to turn my head slightly." The inconvenience is so minor that the solution is itself the inconvenience.
I want to imagine the person who bought the motorized tie rack. They have maybe thirty ties. They stand in front of the closet. They press the button. The carousel rotates. The ties go by, one at a time, at whatever speed the motor allows. If they miss the tie they wanted, they have to wait for it to come around again.
Or they could just look at the ties. The ties are right there. They're not hidden. The problem is not access. The problem is that selecting a tie is a decision, and the carousel doesn't make the decision for you. It just makes the ties move.
The motorized tie rack is the purest expression of the second fantasy. The inconvenience is so small that it barely exists, and the solution is so elaborate that it becomes the new inconvenience.
That's five. The next five get weirder, and they start to reveal a pattern.
Tool six is the battery-powered butter knife. A knife with a motor in the handle that vibrates the blade.
Intended for spreading cold butter.
The task takes three seconds. You take a knife, you scrape it across the butter, you spread it. The butter yields. It always yields. That's what butter does.
The vibrating knife requires charging, cleaning, and storage. And the vibration doesn't actually make cold butter easier to spread — it just makes the knife harder to control. You're adding a motor to a task that your wrist already does perfectly well.
It was sold seriously in catalogs for years. As a real product, with a real price tag, marketed to real people who presumably owned real butter.
I love the battery-powered butter knife because it's the purest expression of the fantasy. The inconvenience is that cold butter is slightly firm. The solution is a motorized blade. The gap between those two things is the entire history of unnecessary invention.
And here's the thing about cold butter. It doesn't stay cold. It's butter. It melts on contact with warm bread. The problem solves itself in the amount of time it takes to make toast.
The vibrating knife is a solution to a problem that has a built-in solution. Thermodynamics already fixed this. You don't need a motor. You need thirty seconds of patience.
Tool seven is the electric nail file for pets. A rotary tool with a spinning abrasive drum, marketed for trimming dog nails.
Dog nails are soft. They're keratin. A ten-dollar clipper does the job in one squeeze per nail.
The rotary file spins fast enough to burn the quick, which is the sensitive part of the nail. So the tool creates a new problem — a dog that's afraid of the buzzing, grinding thing near its paw — while solving a problem that didn't exist.
And the fear is the real cost. Once a dog decides the nail file is scary, every subsequent nail trim becomes a wrestling match. You've turned a thirty-second chore into a lifelong behavioral issue.
The clipper is quiet. The clipper is fast. The clipper doesn't need batteries. The rotary file is a solution to a problem that only exists if you've already decided the clipper is insufficient.
I want to think about the dog's perspective here. The dog doesn't know the nail file is supposed to help. The dog knows there's a loud, vibrating thing near its paw, and it's making a grinding noise, and it smells like hot keratin. That's a threat. The dog is not wrong.
And the owner, who bought the file because they wanted nail trimming to be gentler, now has a dog that's more stressed than it would have been with the clipper. The tool created the problem it was supposed to solve.
Tool eight is the motorized ice cream scoop. A scoop with a heated handle or a rotating bowl.
The problem is hard ice cream. The solution is to wait two minutes, or run the scoop under hot water. Thermodynamics has already solved this.
The motorized scoop adds a cord, a motor, and a failure pattern to a task that is already solved by the fact that ice cream melts.
The heated handle version is actually the funniest to me, because the heat has to travel from the handle through the scoop to the ice cream, and by the time it gets there, the ice cream has already melted on its own. You're paying for a head start of about forty-five seconds.
And the rotating bowl version — the bowl spins to help the scoop cut through. But the scoop is already a lever. Your wrist is the motor. The tool is the tool.
I want to do the math on the heated handle. The handle is heated by a small electric element. The heat travels through the metal of the scoop. Metal is a good conductor, but the scoop is also in contact with ice cream, which is a good heat sink. By the time the heat reaches the ice cream, it's been diluted to almost nothing. You're basically warming the handle for your own comfort.
Which is a nice feature, actually. A warm handle. But it's not what they sold. They sold the idea that the heat would cut through the ice cream. It doesn't. It just makes the handle warm.
Tool nine is the chainsaw-powered blender.
I want to be clear that this is a real product. It mounts a blender jar on a chainsaw engine. It was sold as a gag, but also as a real product you could buy.
The category error is perfect. A chainsaw engine produces torque at low RPM. A blender needs high RPM. The chainsaw engine is the opposite of what a blender needs.
So it blends, but badly. And it's a chainsaw. So you're making a smoothie with a tool that's also capable of cutting down a tree, and the smoothie is chunky.
The chainsaw-powered blender is the one tool on this list that I think actually knows it's absurd. It's self-aware. Which makes it less funny than the butter knife, because the butter knife believed in itself.
That's a real distinction. The chainsaw blender is a joke that someone manufactured. The butter knife is a serious product that became a joke. The second one is the one that tells you something about people.
I want to sit with that for a second. The chainsaw blender was designed to be absurd. Someone said, "What's the most ridiculous combination of tools we can sell?" and then they built it. The absurdity is the product. The butter knife was designed to be useful, and the absurdity is an accident.
The accidental absurdity is the more interesting category. The chainsaw blender is a punchline. The butter knife is a confession. It tells you that someone, somewhere, looked at cold butter and thought, "This needs a motor."
Tool ten is the automatic banana peeler. A motorized device that scores the peel with a rotating blade.
The banana peel is designed to be removed by hand. That's its entire evolutionary purpose. The banana wants you to peel it.
The automatic peeler requires the banana to be a specific size and ripeness. Too green, and the blade doesn't score deeply enough. Too ripe, and the banana turns to mush. The window of correct banana is narrow.
And the task it replaces is the act of pinching the stem and pulling. Which takes one second. And works on every banana.
The automatic banana peeler was sold as a kitchen gadget, not a power tool, but it has a motor and a plug, so it counts. And it's the perfect closing entry because it's the same shape as the leaf pruner: a motorized solution to a task that your hands do better, faster, and with zero setup time.
I want to think about the banana peeler's target market. Who is this for? Someone who eats bananas but finds the peeling process too demanding? Someone who has bananas but lacks thumbs? The implied user is a person who has never successfully peeled a banana by hand, which is a population that, as far as I know, does not exist.
And the banana peeler has a cleaning problem. The blade gets banana residue on it. So after you peel the banana, you have to clean the machine. The banana peel, by contrast, is self-cleaning. You throw it away.
The banana peeler is the leaf pruner of the kitchen. Same shape, same fantasy, different room.
So that's ten. Chainsaw bayonet, Suck Kut, electric leaf pruner, Shovel-Ease Max, motorized tie rack, battery-powered butter knife, electric pet nail file, motorized ice cream scoop, chainsaw-powered blender, automatic banana peeler.
And the second-order pattern is the interesting part. The absurd tools that survive longest are the ones that solve a problem the buyer has already decided is a problem. The tie rack sells because someone hates choosing ties, not because choosing ties is hard. The absurdity is in the marketing, not the mechanism.
The buyer is not stupid. That's the misconception I want to push back on. The buyer is an optimist. They believe the next tool will finally make the task disappear. The marketing targets a real desire — I want this chore to not exist — not a real need.
And the makers are the same shape of person, one step earlier in the pipeline. They believe any task, no matter how small, is a candidate for motorization. The leap from "this is mildly annoying" to "this needs a motor" is the entire business model.
The fantasy of eliminating small inconveniences is older than the motor. The motor just gave it a new form.
I think about the Victorian era, which had its own version of this. The mechanical egg timer. The self-pouring teapot. The automatic hat tipper. Every era has its own leaf pruner. The motor is just the current technology.
And the next era will have its own. The absurd tools of the future will be AI-powered, or app-connected, or blockchain-enabled. The shape stays the same. The motor changes.
Hilbert: The Suck Kut was the easiest thing I ever sold. I worked a kiosk in the mall, Tool Time Terry's, back in ninety-four. Six months. Paid on commission. I sold forty-one of those saws.
Hilbert: I'd do the demonstration. Cut a two-by-four. Hold up the sawdust tray, which was always empty because the vacuum didn't work. I'd tell people the tray was empty because the vacuum was too efficient to leave evidence.
Hilbert: Forty-one units. I was very good at it.
The tray was empty because the dust was going into the motor housing.
Hilbert: I didn't know that then. I knew the tray was empty. That's all I needed.
You sold forty-one saws by telling people the vacuum was so good it left no trace.
Hilbert: The kiosk closed in ninety-five. I still have one. In the garage. Original box. Never used it.
You kept the tool you knew was useless.
Hilbert: It's the only tool I ever sold that I knew was useless. I feel a strange loyalty to it. I've never told anyone this story.
The interesting thing is that your sales pitch was the same shape as the products themselves. You sold the absence of evidence as evidence of success.
Hilbert: I sold the fantasy that the sawdust was gone. The customers wanted it to be gone. The tray was empty. That was enough.
And the saw still cut wood. So the customer got a working saw, and the vacuum part was just... a story they could tell themselves.
Hilbert: The box is in the garage. I know it's there. I don't open it.
That's the thing about absurd tools. They don't stop being absurd when you buy them. They just become absurd things you own.
The loyalty is the part I keep thinking about. You know it's useless. You know the vacuum doesn't work. You know the pitch was a lie. And you still kept it.
Hilbert: It's the only one. I don't keep other things.
Why do you think you kept it?
Hilbert: Because it's proof. I don't know proof of what. Proof that I was good at something, maybe. Proof that people will believe what they want to believe. Proof that an empty tray can be a selling point. I look at the box and I remember the kiosk, and I remember the customers, and I remember how easy it was.
Do you think the customers ever figured it out?
Hilbert: Some of them must have. The vacuum didn't work. You'd use the saw for a month and the motor would start to grind. But nobody came back to complain. Maybe they were embarrassed. Maybe they didn't want to admit they bought a saw because the sawdust tray was empty.
Or maybe they just didn't care. They got a working saw. The vacuum was a bonus that didn't work, but the saw was fine. The absurdity was a feature they could ignore.
Hilbert: I think about that. The saw was fine. The saw was a perfectly good circular saw. The vacuum was the story. And the story was enough to sell forty-one units.
So the kiosk closed, the tools are in the garage, and the question is what we're still buying.
The open question is this: if the absurd tool is defined by a task that didn't need doing, what does that say about the tasks we currently believe need doing?
The absurd tools of today are the AI-powered gadgets of tomorrow. The pattern repeats because the fantasy of eliminating small inconveniences is older than the motor.
The leaf pruner and the automatic banana peeler are the same product. One has a battery, one has a plug, both have a motor, and both solve a problem that your hands already solved before the tool was invented.
And the marketing is the same. The promise is not that the tool works. The promise is that the chore disappears. The tool is just the vehicle for the fantasy.
The fantasy is the product. The tool is the receipt.
